Tracing the Journey
from Spanish Pueblo
to Modern Municipality
In 1901, the civil government of Hindang was formally instituted, however, in the 18th century the municipality had been a pueblo under the Spanish regime. Hindang became a parish and a municipality in September 17, 1861 under the proclamation from Obispado de Cebu, with Baldomero Rubi Ybañez as the first parish priest. Kapitan Pael (Rafael Ballener) was the Kapitan or the administrator during that time. Hindang was ruled by a series of Kapitanes. Kapitan Poni and Kapitan Taran were the last two leaders who served during the Filipino-Spanish revolution from 1896-1898.
Civil government was established in southern towns of Leyte, including Hindang, and was then served by presidentes, forerunners of municipal mayors. Leon Hernandez was appointed president in the year 1900-1901. He planned and constructed the first Municipal Building that was burned into ashes on September 12, 1976 under the leadership of the late Mayor Julio B. Caldoza who served and ran the municipality for more than fifteen years.

Catalino Acompañado gave Hindang the first town Carnival. Vicinal roads and Farm to Market roads were then opened to different lower and mountain barangays. Since then, the Town of Hindang regularly celebrates its Founding Anniversary every September 17 and its fiesta celebration in Honor of St. Michael the Archangel its Patron Saint on every 8th day of May with fanfare, festivals, religious and civic activities.
